Yep. That's Aminé on the cover of his album reading a newspaper and taking a dump.
Fairly-new rapper Aminé hit the music scene in 2014 with his mixtape Odyssey To Me, followed by Calling Brio in 2015. He garnered a bit of attention with the release of his single "Caroline" in 2016, which has become the rapper's biggest song to date, on the way to releasing a few great music videos as well as his first studio album. He is also a member of XXL's 2017 Freshman Class.
Aminé's album Good For You was officially released on July 28, 2017 and debuted at #31 on the US Billboard 200. Good For You features appearances by Nelly, Ty Dolla Sign, Offset (Migos), Charlie Wilson, and Kehlani. Dassit. He does a great deal of the heavy lifting himself throughout the fifteen tracks. Aminé has a clear west coast inspiration; he's from Portland and currently lives in Los Angeles. It's mostly uptempo, with many of the songs about past, present, or future relationships.
"REDMERCEDES" (not about relationships) is one of my favorite songs on the album. It's a fun song with a bouncy beat and lets Aminé relax by taking the pressure off of him lyrically. The video is even more fun! "Heebiejeebies" (about a budding relationship) features Kehlani and is a very well-written hip-hop ballad. Then there's the complex, contemplative "Turf", which is about the struggles of keeping relationships close while still attempting to evolve outside of them.
Good For You is one of my favorite albums of the year. It's catchy, but not too poppy. In my humble opinion, Aminé rises above a large percentage of new artists in the singer/rapper category. He likes to mix pop culture references into his verses - which could eventually render the album outdated - but never comes off as gimmicky. It's too soon to tell if we'll be seeing him for the long run, but his debut effort is surely worth a listen.
Good For You is available on Google Play and Apple Music. WATCH his music video for "Caroline" below!
***UPDATE: REDMERCEDES is a new song and is not featured on Good for You***
