Hamilton: An American Musical has been a big hit practically everywhere. The man(uel) behind the musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda, began it all with The Hamilton Mixtape, which evolved into the show that debuted in 2015.
The mixtape was officially released in December of 2016, and is comprised of select songs from the musical. The songs are rerecorded with popular artists and given more of a studio vibe. It features the likes of Chance the Rapper, the Roots, Jill Scott, Nas, Usher, Kelly Clarkson, and many more. The Hamilton Mixtape debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, and had the largest sales in a week by a compilation album since Cruel Summer by GOOD Music.
This week, Miranda released a video for Immigrants (We Get the Job Done). The song/video features a lineup of four emcees from varying countries, including: K'Naan(Somalia), Snow Tha Product(Mexico/US), Riz MC(London), and Residente(Puerto Rico).
Each verse is lyrically impressive, and the video is filmed as more of a short film rather than your standard music video. You're shown depictions of experiences for immigrants coming into the US, as each rapper tells a particular story. It's mostly set against dark backgrounds, and the images of crowds standing united are inspiring.
